Parbati Shrestha, a single mother from the city Birjunj, close to the India-Nepal border, was unable to support her family, and was in vast need of work. After her husband left when she was pregnant, Parbati was left to raise her 4-year old daughter with no assistance. She struggled through the plenteous challenges of life — she found it near impossible to survive. Seeing her desperation for financial support, close friends encouraged her to sell her 4-year old toddler for $3,000 dollars, while others advised her to find another spouse. Men took advantage, and were never serious about providing any real support. After being employed to an organization that hires fiscally-disadvantaged women to handcraft accessories, Parbati feels more stable and hopeful for her future, as well as that of her daughter’s. Now, she looks forward to what is to come in her new chapter of life.
