MYSTERRA
MYSTERRA WOMAN OF THE MONTH
MAY
MEET
Monique
Monique Lihua, a textile artisan hailing from Congo, inspires many with her intricate rugs and carpets. A princess of Kuba and a part of the Atelier, Monique has been a conduit to the exploration of different rug-making techniques, meshing the best of both worlds; the traditional designs of the Kuba people, and modernist designs associated with the contemporary lifestyle.
Alongside other female artisans, Monique works in the Atelier, which is located in Masina, Kinshansa. There, the magic of the weaving process is seen through from beginning to end, starting with the preparation of the raffia plant, a straw-like fiber, and the softening of the same to be weaved into a meticulously-crafted carpet for customers to enjoy. Lihua finds joy in being a part of the creation of these beautiful masterpieces.
